UFS Resolutions: Faculty Voice in Action

Resolutions are one of the most important tools the University Faculty Senate (UFS) uses to advance faculty perspectives and guide SUNY policy. Resolutions express the collective voice of the Senate and are often the result of careful committee work, sector discussions, and consultation with campus governance bodies.

How Resolutions Are Developed
Standing committees investigate issues of academic policy, governance, student life, and professional practice. When action is warranted, they draft resolutions and submit them for review by the Executive Committee. After review, proposed resolutions are presented for discussion and voting at plenary meetings of the full Senate.

What Resolutions Do
Resolutions may recommend changes to SUNY-wide policy, call for new initiatives, advocate for campus or faculty needs, or provide guidance to the Chancellor, SUNY System Administration, or the Board of Trustees. Some resolutions focus on internal governance, while others address broader issues affecting public higher education in New York and beyond.

Follow-Up and Impact
Once passed, resolutions are communicated by the Senate President to the appropriate individuals or bodies, often accompanied by requests for formal responses. The Senate tracks follow-up actions and continues engagement with stakeholders to support the implementation of key recommendations. Through this process, resolutions become a catalyst for change within the SUNY system.

Transparency and Archives
All passed resolutions are recorded and archived by the Senate and shared publicly on the UFS website. This ensures transparency, accountability, and ongoing dialogue with faculty across SUNY’s campuses.
