What We Do

We Shape Academic Policy
The University Faculty Senate (UFS) serves as the primary governance voice for academic and professional faculty at SUNY’s state-operated and statutory campuses. As a deliberative body, the Senate addresses university-wide educational policies, professional matters, and emerging issues in higher education. Through formal resolutions and informed consultation, the Senate helps guide academic direction across the SUNY system.

We Advise SUNY Leadership
The UFS provides input and feedback to the SUNY Chancellor, Provost, and other senior administrators on policies and initiatives affecting campuses. Senate leaders regularly meet with system administration, participate in task forces and advisory groups, and communicate faculty perspectives to the SUNY Board of Trustees.

We Support Shared Governance
The Senate plays a vital role in strengthening shared governance at both the system and campus levels. It collaborates with campus governance bodies, the Faculty Council of Community Colleges, the SUNY Student Assembly, and other partners to support inclusive, informed decision-making across SUNY. The Senate also produces white papers, handbooks, and reports that help guide governance practice and policy development.

We Conduct Committee Work and Resolutions
Standing committees of the Senate research pressing issues, engage stakeholders, and bring forward policy recommendations for Senate discussion. Committees report at plenary meetings, and their work often results in formal resolutions advocating for changes in practice, policy, or resources. Resolutions may be directed to system administration, campuses, or external bodies.

We Share Knowledge Across Campuses
Through plenary sessions, sector meetings, and reports from campus governance leaders, the Senate serves as a forum for sharing news, identifying trends, and learning from one another. Whether coordinating presidential search processes, offering guidance on curriculum changes, or examining issues of equity and student success, the UFS fosters collaboration across SUNY’s diverse campuses.
